CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Stacy awoke in the afternoon feeling as surprised and enraged as she had when she fell asleep shortly after dawn. Of course the Codex had last been rumored to be in Victor Corbinelli’s possession. The farther away from his death she got, the more of a pain in the ass he became.

She took her time in the shower, simmering in her anger. Questions ran rampant in her mind. How long had Victor had the Codex? Had he been aware of what it was? Most importantly, where the hell was it now?

She headed downstairs not long after, the questions still swarming her. The only comfort she found was in the kitchen where Rowan and Miles were seated at the small table, eating a lunch of sandwiches and pickled vegetables. They informed Stacy that Kiera and Ethan were still asleep after being awake all night.

Stacy was glad for that. They’d both worked hard and deserved the rest.

“And where’s Amy?” Stacy asked as she reached for a turkey and Swiss sandwich. It wasn’t as good as what Kiera would have made, but Stacy was happy with Rowan’s work.

“She’s been holed away in the study since we told her about Victor’s connection to the Codex this morning,” Rowan replied. “She’s doing what she can to find out where he might have kept it.”

A surge of gratitude filled Stacy’s chest. Amy had started working without being asked, and it was a clear reminder to Stacy that her friend was equally important to their team as anyone else.

Along with the questions she wanted to ask about Victor and the Codex, Stacy felt restless. The sleep she’d gotten would have normally left her well-rested, but instead, she felt on the brink of a breakdown. She stuffed a sandwich down and headed toward the back door.

Miles called after her. “Where are you going?”

Stacy didn’t turn back as she replied, “To let the dragon out.”
